Felixstowe has been inhabited for many thousands of years, under the name of Walton. The name of Felixstowe was bestowed upon it in the 13th century. Because of its location, Felixstowe has always been a front-line defence of Harwich against invasion from across the North Sea. Landguard Fort was the site of a fortification since the 16th century, but the current building dates from the 18th century, with modifications in the 19th and 20th centuries.
